The film centers around Leavey (Mara), who forms an unbreakable bond with her military dog, Rex, a K-9 who joins her on dangerous missions while deployed overseas. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, she is no stranger to bringing awareness to animal causes and stories, having made 2013’s critically acclaimed documentary Blackfish, exploring the terrible price orca’s pay for being in captivity for human enjoyment. Mara seemed like the perfect actress to take on this role due to her passionate animal activism. In an interview with W she stated that the safety of the German Shepards used on set was first and foremost.
Based on the real-life story of the young Marine corporal, it explores how Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive K-9, Rex, and through her training and discipline develop a unique bond that helps save many lives over the course of their 100 missions. This is put in jeopardy when on one of their last missions, an IED explosion injures the both of them and their fate is in the balance. The film also stars Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Common (Selma), and Bradley Whitford (Billy Madison). Below you’ll find an interview with film director Gabriela Cowperthwaite, Kate Mara, Common, and Ramón Rodríguez.
Megan Leavey begins its US run on June 9th, while the Caribbean has a late summer premiere.
